Chapter 14: What the Old Thora Said
The second bullet tore through the sleeve of Thora's jacket and opened the skin over her shoulder.
She went down hard behind a slab of black stone.
"Keir!" the Heir shouted. "Hold your fire!"
"You're with her!" Keir yelled back, and she heard the joy in it, the ugly, easy joy of a man who had been given permission. "You're all with her! Stella said she'd do this!"
Ansel dragged Thora deeper into the shadow and pressed his palm to her shoulder.
"You're bleeding."
"It's a graze."
"You're bleeding a lot."
"Then it's a big graze."
She shoved his hand off and looked up the wall.
Forty feet of broken rock, with a crack running up one side and a lip of dead root at the top.
"Keep him talking," she said.
"Thora, no."
"He can't see me from there. Talk."
She went up the crack on her hands and boots with the axe in her belt and blood running down her arm.
Behind her she heard Ansel shout something about breakfast, and Keir laughing.
She came over the lip on her belly, three paces behind him.
He was lying flat with the rifle propped on a stone, sighting down into the ravine.
She stood up, set her boot on the back of his knee, and put the axe blade against his neck.
"Drop it," she said.
Keir went very still.
Then he laughed, short and breathless.
"There she is," he said into the dirt. "Clingy little Thora. Following us even here."
"The rifle."
He opened his fingers.
She kicked it away and hauled him onto his back by the collar.
His eyes were glassy and bright, and his pupils were pinpricks.
He was not seeing her.
He was seeing the woman Stella had trained him to see.
"Go on, then," he said. "Do it. You've wanted to for years."
