Chapter 19: The Father

I played Lacey's message for the brothers in the kitchen on Tuesday night.

Dane listened to the whole thing standing at the stove with a wooden spoon in his hand.

"She cut your sentence," he said. "You said you'd say it to my face."

"I'm going to say it to your face right now," I said. "I'm sorry."

"Noted."

"Saturday is Senior Day," Rory said. He had sat down on the counter without asking his own kitchen. "Lacey chairs the Homecoming committee. She picks the video that plays on the big screen while the seniors walk out."

"So she'll play it with the whole stadium watching," I said.

"With their parents watching," Dane said, quietly.

He turned back to the stove.

I watched his shoulders and thought of the speakers at the tailgate, and I knew the next thing he said would be that he would handle it.

"We handle it," I said, before he could.

He looked back at me over his shoulder, and one corner of his mouth moved.

On Wednesday their father came home a day early.

I was setting the table when the front door opened, and a big man in a pilot's jacket walked in with a duffel on one shoulder and a cooler in his other hand.

He had Dane's gray eyes and Rory's mouth, and he put the cooler down and looked at me for a long moment.

"Anneliese Barron," he said. "The last time I saw you, you were eight, and you'd lost your front tooth in my pool."
