Chapter 14: Twenty Minutes

Gwen was out of the study before I could breathe.

I heard her heels on the stairs, fast, and then the sound she made when she saw him.

"Who let you in?"

"Nobody," Dal said. "The door was open."

"It was shut."

"Not by the time I got to it."

I stepped out of the closet with my knees shaking and my arms empty.

Tabitha caught my sleeve for a moment, shoved the box back toward the desk with her foot, and mouthed at me.

Phone.

I nodded.

Then I walked down my father's staircase with my hand on his banister, and I did not hurry.

Dal stood on the marble in his canvas jacket, and the foyer looked smaller with him in it.

Gwen stood two steps from him with her chin up and her hand at her pearls.

He didn't look at her.

He looked at me, once, from my hair to my shoes.

Then he put out his hand, and I took it.

"There you are," Gwen said. "You were upstairs the whole time."

"I was in my father's study," I said. "In my house."

"Your house. That is a very charming thing to say in my foyer."

"The deed is in my name, Gwen. You've lived here on my goodwill for two years."

Behind her, Tabitha appeared at the top of the stairs, flushed and furious.

"She was in the closet?" Tabitha said. "I looked right at that closet, Mama. She must have come back through the kitchen."
