Chapter 18: The Gala
The old woman from next door lent Katie a green velvet dress from 1968.
It had a high neck and a low back, and it fit her.
"You'll want to look expensive," the old woman said, pinning her hair. "Rich people only listen to people who look like they don't need them."
My suit came from a man in Block D who had sewn uniforms in prison for six years and finished the jacket by midnight.
It was black, and it fit me better than anything I had ever bought.
We arrived at the Statehouse hotel at eight.
The ballroom doors stood open.
Two hundred guests in black tie stood under crystal chandeliers, and a string quartet played something thin and expensive.
At the front of the room a gold easel held a portrait under a velvet cloth.
A girl with a tablet stood at the entrance, checking names.
"Good evening," she said. "Name?"
I looked at her.
"Reed Gordon Westerfield," I said. "And Mrs. Westerfield."
Katie's hand tightened on my arm.
She had not been called that before, and she did not correct it.
