Chapter 11: Quiet
"Quiet," I whispered, and put my hand over his mouth.
Torsten looked down at me from about six inches away with his eyes crinkled over my fingers.
He was lying on my childhood bed, on his side, with one boot still on.
His head had already hit the sloped ceiling twice.
The room was a narrow slice under the eaves of my father's house.
It had a window over the harbor and a shelf of faded swimming ribbons.
The bed was a twin.
His shoulders hung off both edges.
"I'm serious," I breathed. "The floor is thin. He can hear a sneeze from the kitchen."
Torsten bit the heel of my palm, gently.
I nearly yelped.
He took my wrist, pulled my hand away, and kissed the inside of it. "I'll be good."
"You're never good."
"I'm excellent at quiet," he whispered. "Watch."
He rolled me onto my side with my back to his chest.
It took one hand.
He tucked me against him in the narrow bed, curled around me, and his arm slid under my head for a pillow.
His body was hot down my whole back.
I felt his breath at my ear.
"Dress," he said, and tugged the zipper down so slowly that I heard each tooth.
I shivered.
He peeled the cotton down my shoulders and arms, and I wriggled it off my hips, and kicked it down the bed.
He undid my bra with one finger.
Then his big hand came around and covered my breast, warm and calloused, and he thumbed the nipple until I bit my own lip.
Downstairs a cabinet door shut.
We both froze.
A chair scraped, and a faucet ran, and after a long moment, the sound of someone humming.
"Donald Philbrook hums," Torsten whispered against my neck. "I did not expect that."
"He did it when I was little. Don't make me laugh."
"I wouldn't dream of it."
His other hand slid down my stomach.
I felt it go under the waist of my underwear.
I reached back and took a fistful of his shirt to keep from making a sound.
