Chapter 14: Distance

I left before dawn with the Tax truck and a full tank, and I left no note.

If the load landed on me when I was far from them, then that was the answer.

I would carry it myself.

I drove thirty miles east along the old highway.

The Yard shrank to a smudge in the mirror, and the only sound was wind in the cab.

Then I stopped at a collapsed overpass.

A concrete span had come down across the road in the war, and under it was a buried bus.

Seventy feet of slab sat on the roof of the thing.

It was a perfect test.

It was big, it was ugly, and it was nobody's life.

I got out and stood in front of the slab.

I raised my arm.

"All right," I said to the cuff. "Take it from me."

The blue light climbed to my shoulder.

I felt the concrete, the rebar, and the dead bus underneath, a single dense weight pushing down on every muscle I had.

I lifted.

The slab came up an inch, then a foot, trembling in the air.

Then the pull started.
