Chapter 19: The Plaque
Three hundred people turned in their chairs.
Polite applause started up front, the kind that waits to see what it is clapping for.
I stood.
My friend squeezed my hand once under the tablecloth and let go.
The old man in the corduroy jacket said, very low, "Go on, girl."
I walked.
It was a long way from the kitchen doors to the stage, down the center aisle between white orchids and silver place cards.
My heels clicked on the parquet.
I passed the table where the foundation board sat, men in tuxedos and women in jewels.
They turned toward me with the fixed look of people who already know what a scene is.
I passed the lady in lavender from the club.
She gave me the smallest nod.
I passed Teddy, who sat at a front table beside an empty chair and had gone white to the lips.
