Chapter 23: Tobias's Debt

Tobias was kneeling in the middle of the hall when I came up the stairs.

He had taken off his coat and boots, and he knelt on the bare flagstones with his hands open on his knees.

The pack stood around him in a ring, silent.

Nobody had told them what he was going to do.

"Alpha," he said, without lifting his head. "I put my hands on your throat in front of every wolf in this room."

"You did."

"The room did it, and I did it. I remember both. I can't give you back that morning."

He looked up, and his green eyes were wet and steady.

"I'm offering you my life. You can end it here, in front of them, and no wolf will say you were wrong."

The silence in the hall went on and on.

I had thought about this on the stairs.

I had pictured him dead on the floor, and I had waited to feel something.

I felt nothing but tired.

"I don't want your life," I said. "A dead tracker doesn't help me."

"Then what do you want?"

"Four of the border stones have been cut," I said, loud enough for the back of the hall. "The cut ones burn. Anyone who touches one gets the fever. Sabine's people did it, and she knew it would keep the pack away."

Tobias nodded slowly.

"I need those stones reset on their old marks, whole, and sealed. By dark."

There was a gasp from the hunters at the walls.

"It can't be done," said the steward, who had gone white. "Each stone weighs as much as a horse. They're hot with the damping. No wolf can carry one."
