Chapter 11: Awake Enough

"Your eyes," Rhys said.

"I know."

"Sierra, they're silver."

"I know. She's awake."

I crossed his sister's old room, barefoot, in a borrowed shirt that came to my thighs.

"I can stand up on my own," I said. "That was your rule. I'm asking."

He did not move from the doorway.

His own eyes had gone gold, and his hand on the frame had dug four dents into the wood.

"Say it plainly," he said, hoarse. "I won't take anything you haven't said."

"I want you in this bed tonight."

"And?"

"I want your mouth and your hands and your cock," I said. "I've wanted them since you dropped the chalk."

The frame cracked under his fingers.

He crossed the room in two strides and kissed me.

It wasn't like the office.

It was deep and slow and total, his hand fisted in my hair and my back against the wall.

When I opened my mouth under his, he groaned and pulled me harder against him.

I pulled the borrowed shirt over my head.

I had nothing on under it.

He stopped.

His eyes went over me once, slowly, from my collarbone to my knees, and I watched his throat move.

"Tell me to stop," he said. "Right now, if you want to."

"Don't you dare."

He laughed, rough and unsteady, and lifted me.

My legs went around his waist, and he carried me to the bed and laid me down in the moonlight.

He stood over me and pulled his own shirt off.

He was broad and scarred, his chest ridged with old claw marks.

I put my hands on him, because I could.

"Sierra." His forehead dropped to mine. "You've never."

"No."

"I'll be slow."

"Don't be slow."

He kissed my throat, my shoulder, the curve of my breast.
