The kitchen door was unlocked at eight-forty, exactly as Candice had promised.
Cade and I came through it into the steam and the clatter, past a line cook who looked at us and went back to his fries.
Through the pass window I could see the room.
A hundred and twenty people, string lights, a banner that said LOW TIDE GRAND OPENING.
And where the walnut bar had been, a sheet of plywood on two sawhorses under a white tablecloth.
"He's using a card table," Cade murmured.
"It's very festive."
Jo found us at the swinging door in her black dress with a folder under her arm.
"I've got copies," she said. "Fifteen sets, one for every table. I was at the print shop at six."
"Who are they for?"
"People who will cause a scene." She grinned. "Go get him."
She went out through the swinging door and dropped a folder on every table.
Trevor's mother sat in the front row in her pearls, with her handbag on her knees.
