Chapter 12: The Reception
Casa Lucchesi smelled of garlic, candle wax and a hundred white roses.
Teo had strung lights across the whole dining room.
Sixty guests sat under them at long tables, eating the best veal in Chicago.
I wore a cream silk dress with a deep V in the back and a skirt that swung when I walked.
Carmine had not let go of my hand for an hour.
Every few minutes, somebody stood to toast us.
Every few minutes, he looked at me.
"Come with me," he murmured, between the second and third toast.
"Where?"
"The pantry."
"Carmine, we have sixty people."
"They have wine and a priest to talk to. I have a wife and ten minutes."
I should have said no.
I was already standing.
The pantry behind the kitchen was narrow and cold, lit by one bare bulb.
Shelves of flour sacks and canned tomatoes lined the walls.
He shut the door behind us and turned the lock.
Then he had me against the shelves with my hands over my head and his mouth on my throat.
"Quiet," he said. "The cooks are ten feet away."
"You're the one who brought me here."
"I know. I regret nothing."
He pushed the cream silk up my thighs, and his hand found nothing underneath.
He stopped.
"Leona."
"It saves time."
