Chapter 20: The Vote
The back room of Casa Lucchesi held a round table, five old men and a painting of the Bay of Naples.
Ottavio's chair was set across from Carmine's, with a space beside it.
I walked in beside my husband, in the black dress, with my hand on his good arm.
Nobody said a word as we crossed the room.
The oldest man of the Table looked at Carmine's arm, bare of the sling, and nodded once.
Ottavio sat in his place with his wolf-headed cane across his knees.
Six of his men stood along the wall behind him.
Vince sat in the space at his side in a gray suit, with a face like paper.
He did not look at me.
"We are here for the chair," said the oldest man.
"The Don of the Lucchesi has taken a wife, as we asked."
"Don Orsini says the Don's blood heir is another man's son. Don Orsini, you speak first."
Ottavio rose.
"Gentlemen, it is simple."
"Carmine Lucchesi has kept another man's son in his house for twenty-three years and told no one."
"A man who hides that cannot be trusted with your lives."
"And you?" said the man with the nose like a hatchet. "What would you have us do?"
"Give the chair to the next of blood."
"To the boy."
"To my son. As it should have been from the beginning."
