Chapter 21: Ruya
I didn't wait for Laleh.
If Ruya had wanted Laleh, she'd have left a horseshoe.
She'd left a pin, and it smelled of a perfume I'd made her with my own hands.
I washed the qanat mud off my face in one of the water jars, which felt like a sin.
Then I put the pin in my sleeve and walked up to the palace alone.
The Rose Court was dark except for one lit window at the far end.
A little garden house stood there among the pink stone arches, with jasmine climbing its walls.
The old Sultan had built it for his first wife.
Ruya had been living in it since the betrothal.
Two men stood at its gate with swords at their hips.
On the pommels, a key inside a ring.
They looked at me without surprise.
"The perfumer," one said. "You're expected."
He opened the gate.
Inside, the garden house was all lamplight and silk cushions and the smell of jasmine and pink pepper.
Sahar sat on a cushion in the middle of the floor with a plate of apricots in her lap.
She wasn't tied. She wasn't hurt.
