Chapter 20: Dalton
Nobody in Box 4 breathed.
Below us, three hundred donors went on murmuring over their programs, because the box curtain hid the gun from the hall.
Alden turned in his chair.
He looked at his son, and then at the pistol, and he sighed.
"Put it down, Dalton."
"No."
"You've never finished a thing in your life."
"Alden," said the lawyer, in a thin voice, "I'd stay very still."
"He won't shoot me. He's a rower. He needs a coxswain to tell him when to pull."
The pistol shook, and Dalton's jaw shook with it.
"Three years," he said. "You said it like you were ordering a sandwich."
"I said it like a man who will be there when you come out."
"You won't. You'll be in the front row, in a good suit, telling a reporter you did everything you could. You'll cry."
"Probably," Alden said, with real fondness. "I'm very good at it."
I moved.
I didn't stand up, because he would have noticed.
I slid my hand across the table and laid it on the lectern.
