Chapter 24: A Room With One Window
The room with the window was at the end of the second-floor hall, behind a door painted shut.
I turned the brass key, and the door stuck, and then it gave with a crack of old paint.
Inside there was a bed with white sheets, a writing table, a chair, and a pair of tall shutters latched from the inside.
Dust lay over everything.
"Nobody has opened this in my time," Emeric said behind me.
"Then I'll go first."
He stood in the doorway in his shirtsleeves with his hands tucked into his armpits.
It was twenty minutes to sunrise.
We had been awake all night, and my braid was still loose down my back.
I crossed the room, put my hands on the iron latch, and looked at him over my shoulder.
"Ask me," I said.
"May I?"
"I meant, ask me whether to open it."
He almost laughed.
"Will you open the shutters, Clem?"
