Chapter 12: The Rose Club

"No," I said.

My mother kept smiling.

"No what, honey?"

"No, he's not wearing your tuxedo. No, we're not coming."

"Katie." Her smile didn't move, but her voice did. "I have told the entire Rose Club. The paper is sending a photographer."

"Then tell them we're busy."

The cottage door opened behind me.

Quinton leaned in the doorway with a dish towel over his shoulder.

"We'll come," he said.

I turned around and stared at him.

"Quin."

"We'll come, Diane. Thank you for the tux." He took the garment bag out of her hands. "I'll wear my own shoes."

My mother practically floated back across the yard.

I shut the door.

"Have you lost your mind?"

"She's going to parade me around the room like a prize steer," he said. "I'd like to see her face when the steer talks."

The Rose Club Christmas gala was in the ballroom of the Willow Brook Country Club, under four chandeliers and a ceiling of white tulle and fairy lights.

Every one of them already knew.

I could see it on their faces when we walked in.

Three days ago these women had sneered at the bum in the thrift suit.

Tonight they came at him.

"Mr. Stuyvesant! What a pleasure. Katie, sweetheart, you look gorgeous."

The Rose Club treasurer, the one with opinions about my thighs, actually curtsied.

Quinton was in my mother's tuxedo and his own beat-up thrift shoes.

He was polite.

"And what was it like?" one woman breathed, with her hand on his sleeve. "Under the bridge? It must have been so romantic. Like a movie."

"It was cold," Quinton said. "And on Monday night, it was a garage."

The woman's hand came off his sleeve.

She glanced at my mother across the room.

By the time we sat down for dinner, half the table had heard it.
