Chapter 7: Eleven Days

I walked up the ridge without feeling the hill.

Kieran was standing at the window of his office when I came in. He had not moved from it.

He turned around. His face changed when he saw mine.

"He told you," he said.

"Is it true?"

"Yes."

He did not explain first, and he did not soften it. That was the only reason I did not walk straight out again.

"Eleven days," I said. "You knew for eleven days."

"I knew you were my mate. On the third day my scout came back from the ridge and told me what he saw through the pack house windows."

"What did he see?"

"You carrying a tray. A man hitting you in the stomach."

I had to put my hand on the back of a chair.

"And you stood here."

"I stood here." He said it without looking away. "I sent a formal request to your father on the fourth day. I asked to visit as an Alpha and a guest. He refused in writing."

"You could have crossed."

"I could have."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because an Alpha who crosses a border uninvited gives every pack on the mountain the right to come after his. Mine has two hundred people in it. Eleven days ago I told myself that was the reason."

"And now?"

"Now I think it was a good reason and a bad answer." His voice was low. "I should have gone over that creek on the third day. I will not say I shouldn't have."
