Chapter 18: The Pack Walks Away

Morwenna's POV

At noon the courtyard of Stonewater held every wolf Redmoor had.

They stood in rows on the cobbles, children on shoulders, old women on stools their sons had carried out.

I came down the steps with my daughter in my arms and Dorian half a pace behind me.

He had not asked me anything.

He had stood in the doorway of my room that morning with his hands clenched at his sides and let the silence stretch until it hurt.

"I'm not going to say yes to him," I had told him.

His whole body had changed.

"You were so sure I would," I said.

"I was sure I'd have no right to stop you."

"Dorian."

"Yes."

"Stand behind me and watch."

He had.

Now Garrick and Verity were at the foot of the steps, a yard apart, and the sun showed every line on their faces.

Neither of them had slept.

"Wolves of Redmoor," I said.

My voice carried.

It was a thing I hadn't known I could do, until I took the cuff off.

"Six years ago the Goddess put a mark on my wrist and gave me to your Alpha. I came to your packhouse as a girl and I sat at the bottom of your table, because your elders said a half-vampire couldn't be Luna."

Nobody moved.

"I believed them. I thought I was less. I thought if I was quiet enough, and grateful enough, and useful enough, he'd choose me."
