Chapter 20: Her Husband's Letter

Dorothea took the envelope between two fingers.

The wax was black and brittle.

She turned it over, and for a moment her hands were an old woman's hands, with the knuckles standing out.

"It is a forgery," she said.

"It is in your husband's own writing," the lawyer said. "It has sat in my firm's vault since nineteen seventy-six, under his seal and his instructions."

"I do not wish to read it here."

"You wished to read a great deal in front of three hundred people tonight," Calla said.

Her voice carried to the back of the room.

Dorothea's head came up.

She looked from her granddaughter to Alaric, with his arm around the woman she had had arrested, to the crowd of her friends, who were not looking away.

"Very well," she said. "Let them hear it. Let them hear what that man thought of me."

She broke the seal.

She read the first line, and the color left her mouth.

The paper shook.

"I cannot," she said, very quietly. "My eyes."

Nobody moved.

Then Yvette stepped out of the circle of Alaric's arm and held out her hand.

"May I?"

Dorothea looked at her for a long time.

"You," she said. "Of all of them."

"Yes."

"Why would you?"

"Because he was talking to someone like me," Yvette said. "And I think he would want it said right."

The old woman put the letter in her hand.

Yvette unfolded it.
