Chapter 13: Names
The rope stopped moving through his hands.
For the length of one flash he stood and looked at me, with the whole weight of the house on his arms.
Then the dark came down, the stern swung out, and the line began to run.
"Astrid Lunde," he said.
He had said my first name once in the cabin, low, with his hand on my face.
He said the rest of it flat.
"I know you," he said. "You spat on my shoes."
The wind took half of it, and I heard the other half anyway.
"Don't talk," I said. "Give me the end."
"Go below."
"The end, Captain."
I did not wait for him to answer.
I got both hands on the wet line behind his and threw my weight back, and the rope stopped running.
We hauled hand over hand, with the lake hammering the hull, until the eye of the line came up out of the black.
