Chapter 20: The Party
The party began at seven, on the terrace, under three hundred paper lanterns.
Eighty guests stood on the lawn, and a string quartet played beside a long table where the Halvorsen partners sat in a row.
There were three of them, two men and a grey-haired woman in charge.
They had been told they were attending a family celebration.
Tripp stood at the center in his best white linen with a glass in his hand and Edith at his shoulder.
Camille stood a pace behind with her camera case, smiling at everybody.
Joanna and I came in together at ten past.
I wore the green dress.
I had not planned it as a statement, but the room turned and looked, and I let it.
"Rochelle," Tripp said, and crossed to me with both hands out. "There you are. You look wonderful."
"Thank you."
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said, turning, and the quartet stopped. "I'd like to say a few words, if I may."
The terrace went quiet.
"Five years ago my wife and I started a company on a kitchen table, with a drawing and a loan." He smiled around the lawn. "I would like to thank her, and my mother, and the woman who has kept this company running for six years, my friend Camille."
Camille ducked her head modestly.
"A family business," Tripp said. "That is what Halvorsen is buying, and I couldn't be prouder."
The grey-haired woman lifted her glass a half inch.
I put my own glass on a passing tray and walked to the front of the terrace.
