Chapter 10: Birthday Dinner
I opened the door and took the soup out of Kelsey's hands.
"You didn't have to do this," I said.
"Of course I did." She hugged me one-armed over the pot. "I was so worried about you two."
I did not say anything about the voicemail.
I put the pot on the stove and let her stir it, and I watched her hands.
She wore her gold bracelet and a ring I had never seen.
She was very good at being kind, and I realized I had never once watched her do it.
Floyd stood by the fridge with his arms folded and a face I could not read.
"Thursday's my birthday," I said, once the soup was in bowls. "Hank and his wife are taking me to dinner at Marconi's. Eight o'clock. A few people from work."
"Oh, I'll be there."
"Floyd is coming, too."
Kelsey's spoon paused for the shortest moment.
"That's brave of you," she said warmly.
"I'm a brave person," I said. "I've been told."
On Thursday night I wore my good black dress, and I walked into Marconi's with Floyd beside me and no cane.
Hank and his wife had pushed two tables together near the front window.
There were a dozen of us.
Four were my coworkers from claims, two were Hank's neighbors, and one was a woman from the bakery who had once offered me a weekend job and never given up on me.
Kelsey came in last, in a red dress and a lot of lipstick, with a wrapped box in her arms.
She kissed my cheek.
She sat across from me, and we ordered, and we ate.
