Chapter 20: The Night Before
There were two cars at the end of the lane and four men standing beside them.
They did not come closer.
They stood in the dusk with their hands folded in front of them like men at a funeral, and they watched the house.
My mother's cousin had come in from the barn with a shotgun.
He was a lean sunburned man in a feed cap, and he stood on the porch and broke the gun open and showed the men at the end of the lane that it was loaded.
Then he closed it and leaned it against the rail where they could see it.
He did not point it at anyone.
"They're not coming up," Aurelio said from the kitchen window. "They're sent to watch. If they wanted us, they'd have come in the night with the lights off."
"Then why show themselves?" I said.
"So I know." His jaw was tight. "So I spend tonight knowing."
My mother put a pan of rice on the stove and a pot of beans beside it.
"We eat," she said. "Then I pray. Then I sleep. A person can only do three things at once."
We ate in the kitchen with the shades down and the cousin's shotgun on the porch.
Nobody said much.
After supper my mother kissed my forehead, kissed Aurelio's cheek without asking, and went to the back bedroom with her rosary.
The cousin took a chair on the porch.
The house went quiet.
I stood at the sink drying the last plate, big and heavy, with a dish towel over my shoulder.
Aurelio came up behind me.
He put his hands on my hips and his mouth against the back of my neck.
