Chapter 21: The Song
"Registered owner," I said. "She can't own it. I wrote the words in our kitchen."
Jameson had his phone out. He was already calling the lawyer.
She picked up on the first ring. She'd been watching the live.
"I saw," she said. "Give me ten minutes."
It took her six.
"She registered it three years ago," the lawyer said on speaker. "Words and music. Grimball Creative listed as owner. Lisette Grimball listed as writer."
"Writer," Ollie said. "She can't play a C scale."
"She doesn't have to. She filed first. Now we have to show the song existed before she ever met you, and show who made it."
"With what?" I said.
"Anything with a date on it, from before that coffee shop."
Ollie was already nodding.
"The session," he said. "I keep every session. I've got that night on a drive in my garage."
"And the music?" the lawyer said. "Who wrote the melody?"
I looked at the piano.
"My grandmother," I said. "She used to hum it to me. When I was little she wrote it down so I'd have it."
