Chapter 23: Back Home
I came down one step.
"For good?" I said.
"For good. I'm a staff surgeon now. I operate. I don't chair anything."
"You loved being chief."
"I loved being right," he said. "It turns out those aren't the same thing."
Ollie stood up beside me.
"I'm going to go check on the boy who's asleep and doesn't need checking," he said, and went inside.
The neighbour across the road had gone in. The only sound on the street was his sprinkler ticking around.
Jameson stayed at the foot of my steps.
He didn't come up.
"You could have called," I said.
"You'd have heard it from a press release first. The hospital sends one at nine tomorrow."
He looked at the dark window of Benji's room.
"I said you told the internet before you told me. I wasn't going to do the same thing to you."
I sat there with my arms around my knees.
Four years ago he hadn't driven across a street to ask me one question.
Tonight he'd flown four hundred miles in scrubs to answer one I hadn't asked.
"There's a couch," I said. "It's too short for you."
