Chapter 16: A Real Doctor
Corinne's POV
Owen came back from Phoenix at six in the morning with a green folder and no sleep.
By ten Piper was sitting in a doctor's waiting room in Marylebone, one knee bouncing, holding her own brand-new phone.
A colleague of Owen's at Imperial had made the call.
The doctor was a woman in a gray cardigan who shook Piper's hand and then looked at her face for a moment before she looked at any papers.
"Would you like anyone in with you?" she asked.
"Her," said Piper, pointing at me. "And my brother, but he can sit by the door."
Owen took the chair by the door.
The doctor read the pill bottle label.
Then she read the records Owen's father had emailed overnight.
She read for a long time, and nobody spoke.
"Piper," she said at last. "Who decided on this dose?"
"The family doctor. In Scottsdale."
"When?"
"When I was sixteen. After the bad year."
"And has it ever been reviewed?"
"My mom takes me. She talks to him." Piper's knee had stopped. "I sit in the car."
The doctor set the papers on her desk.
"This dose is for a crisis," she said. "A few weeks, perhaps a few months, while we find something better. It isn't for six years. It's likely that some of what you've been calling your panic is the medicine itself, and some of it is what happens when a dose wears off."
Piper looked at her.
"Are you saying I'm not sick?"
"I'm saying you are ill and also over-medicated, and those are two different problems. I can help you with both. It will take a few months, and it will be slow."
