The banner hung over the stage in the Great Hall in dark green letters.
THE LANDRY FAMILY EDUCATIONAL FUND, WITH GRATITUDE.
I stood under it holding a paper cup of wine, with Owen on my left and six people from my cohort on my right.
"Is that her?" one of them whispered.
"That's her."
Mrs. Landry stood at the foot of the stage in a cream suit, shaking hands with the head of the department.
Dylan stood two steps behind her with his hands folded.
He had shaved.
His jacket was borrowed, and I could see where it didn't fit across the shoulders.
"He came," Owen said quietly.
"He had to. Her hand was on his mother's house."
"Maybe."
I looked at Dylan and tried to read him.
He didn't look at me once.
The head of the department tapped the microphone.
"Friends, it is a pleasure to thank the Landry family for another year of generosity."
Polite applause.
Mrs. Landry took the stage without any hurry.
"Thank you," she said. "Mental health among young people is close to my heart. It is why our Fund exists, and why we ask our fellows to give of themselves."
She turned and held out a hand.
"Dylan here is one of them. He gave up a place in London to be with a friend in need. That is the kind of generosity we hope to see in the next generation."
Dylan walked up the steps.
The room clapped.
I felt Owen go still beside me.
Dylan took the microphone from her hand.
She let him, smiling, thinking he would say what he'd been given.
