Chapter 14: Stepmother

Haakon didn't go down.

He came to the window beside me, bare to the waist, with my mark on his neck, and pushed the casement open.

The cold lake air poured in.

Down in the yard, every face turned up.

"Seven days," Haakon said.

That was all.

He shut the window.

"That's it?" I said. "Seven days? No speech?"

"He made the speech. I don't need one."

"He's thirty-one. You're forty-four, and you've been up all night."

He turned and looked at me in his shirt, with my hair everywhere and his bite on my neck.

"I have," he agreed. "Come back to bed."

"Haakon. He's going to fight you for your pack."

"In seven days. It's six in the morning."

He hooked a finger in the collar of the shirt and pulled me in by it.

"He wants me thinking about him. I'd rather think about you."

The next morning, Freya started.

I came down to breakfast with Haakon, and the hall went quiet the way it always did now.

Not the old quiet.

The new one.

Wolves stood up from the benches as I passed and bowed their heads, and I still didn't know where to put my hands.
