Chapter 12: Thursdays on Halsted
Nika's POV
"You opened it," Tomasso said, pleased. "I wondered whether you would."
He came into the study and shut the door behind him.
Lev stepped between us.
Tomasso looked at him with mild interest, and then at the folder in my hands.
"Put the gun down, Karasev. It's a family conversation."
"Stay where you are," Lev said.
"I'm in my own study."
He walked around the desk and leaned against it with his ankles crossed.
He was still smiling.
"Go on," he said to me. "Ask. You've been waiting five years to ask."
My mouth was dry.
"The first Thursday," I said. "Did you ever once taste the tart?"
"I hate lemon."
I closed my eyes.
I had stood at that stall in the cold and watched a man in a beautiful coat eat my cooking and call it the best he'd ever had.
"I chose the stall," Tomasso said, almost fondly. "I chose the coat. Bruno thought the coat was too much. I said, she's a baker, she'll like someone who looks like he's never seen flour."
"You had photos of me before you ever said hello."
"I had your whole life. Your mother's grave. Your father's habits. Which of his men watched you, and from where." He glanced at Lev. "I found that one in the first month. The grey coat. A little too tidy for a man pretending to be nobody."
Lev's pistol did not move.
"The ring," I said.
"Ah."
He lifted my left hand with two fingers and looked at the band.
"Your father put a listening piece in it. I found that in the first week, too. I never mentioned it." He let my hand drop. "Everything I said at my own table, for five years, I said for him to hear. Every dull little speech about the docks. Every loving word to my wife. I wanted him comfortable."
