Chapter 10: The Dance and the Glove

"You could say that word tonight," I said. "You haven't, because you're not sure."

His hand tightened on my waist.

"I am sure of the girl at the mill."

"So am I."

We turned together under the candles, and the court turned around us, and a hundred faces tried not to stare.

"Rosalind has my glove," the prince said. "I left it in the mill when the guards lifted me. She kept it for three years."

"My stepmother took it from my room and gave it to her."

"You had a glove of mine?"

"I had a glove and a button. I had a letter every week to my old nurse that told her everything. Lady Tarrant burned the letters."

"Burned them." He said it flatly.

"After she read them. Everything Rosalind told you at the wedding breakfast came out of my own hand."

He missed a step, and I felt him steady himself.

"Why would a girl in a country house write her nurse a letter every week?"

"Because the nurse was the only person who answered."

He was silent for the length of a turn.

"Rosalind says you envy her. She says you've told this story to the servants since before I came."

"I told it to one servant, and I told her in a letter."

"She also knows what I said in my fever. Word for word."

"Because I wrote it down."

His eyes held mine, and for a moment I saw a crack in the certainty.

"You name a button I already hold, and a glove you say was taken. You can't show me a single thing she hasn't also got."
