Chapter 16: Public Payments

The account was public, and it went back to April.

I read it on Taylor's couch at seven in the morning, under a blanket, with my coffee going cold.

Every Friday, the same payment arrived in my sister's Venmo.

Four hundred dollars, from a man whose profile photo showed him in a quarter-zip at a company picnic.

Taylor knew him at once.

"That's her old boss," she said. "The regional director. She told everyone he fired her."

The notes under the payments were short.

"dinner tonight 🍷"

"rent help"

"for the car"

"see you at 8 xx"

I traced them with my finger on the screen.

Thirty weeks. Twelve thousand dollars.

My sister had not paid her half of the rent, which was five hundred and seventy-five a month, in seven months.

She had never once been broke.

"She was never short," I said. "She just wasn't paying me."

"She was seeing her boss on Fridays and Colin the rest of the week." Taylor took the phone back. "Do you want to tell him?"

"Not yet."

"Hannah."

"I want him to see it first," I said. "In daylight, from me."

I printed the pages on the library's printer at ten, with a key I wasn't supposed to have.

Colin came to my desk at eleven-forty.

He was in his camel coat, and he looked as if he hadn't slept.

I slid a folder across the counter before he could speak.

"What's this?" he said.

"Something you should see before you buy a ring."
