Chapter 19: Defender of the Year
The Defender of the Year gala was held on Saturday in the ballroom of the biggest hotel downtown.
Four hundred people sat at round tables with white cloths and gold place cards.
There were judges, partners, two city councilmen and a woman from the victims' rights council, who was the one handing out the award.
I stood behind the service doors in a black dress, with Tierney on my left and Tull on my right.
Tull had come straight out of the hospital.
His hands were wrapped to the wrist in white gauze, and his wife had buttoned his jacket for him.
"You don't have to do this," I told him.
"Yes, I do," he said.
The technician in the sound booth had watched the Closet Girl video forty times.
He had taken Tierney's cable without a word and plugged it into my phone.
Out in the room, the woman from the council reached the end of her speech.
"For his courage in defending the accused," she said, "and his unwavering faith in the law, the Defender of the Year is Brice Wynn."
The applause was long.
Brice walked up in a black tuxedo with a new black watch on his right wrist.
He took the plaque.
He took the microphone.
"I'd like to thank my family," he said, and he looked at the front table, where his father sat in his best suit with his chin up. "I'd like to thank my mentors. And I'd like to thank everyone who kept faith with me this month, in the face of personal attacks."
I walked through the service doors.
My heels were loud on the floor.
Heads turned one table at a time.
"Victoria," Brice said into the microphone.
His smile did not slip.
"This is a private event," a man in a headset hissed, reaching for my arm.
