The wind was warm by dawn.
It came across the flight line in long soft pushes.
The tarps on the jets breathed with it.
The thermometer by the hangar door read forty-four.
Everyone on the base was awake, and nobody spoke above a murmur.
Six Guard trucks idled in a row at the apron with their canvas covers down.
Eleven white airport shuttle buses stood behind them with their destination signs dark.
Tor's mechanics were loading the cutting rigs.
Bets sat at the radio with her glasses on and her headset on.
She looked like someone who had been born in it.
Jonas stood at the north fence with a bag of air horns and his grandfather's old helmet pulled down over his ears.
Tor was on a folding chair beside him, wrapped to the chin, with oxygen he refused to look at.
"Go on," he said to me. "I've got the base."
"Tor."
"I've held a harder base than this with a worse crew."
I kissed his cheek, which I'd never done.
He pretended not to notice.
Wyatt waited at the Peterbilt, in the first gray light, with the cattle trailer hitched behind.
