Chapter 9: How to Live With Him
The binder had a plastic tab at the back that Weston had never opened.
He opened it at six on Sunday morning, on the floor of his office, with a cold coffee beside him.
Behind the tab was a spiral-bound booklet in my handwriting, forty pages, titled in blue pen: How to Live With Him.
I had written it for myself, in the first year, on lunch breaks.
I had meant to burn it when I left.
I had left it in the binder instead, and I told myself that was an accident.
He read it in one sitting, and then he read it again.
He told me later what the first page said.
He won't ask for water. Put a glass at his left hand before every meeting and he will drink it without noticing.
On page nine, he goes quiet when he is afraid, not when he is angry.
Do not fill the silence. Sit next to him.
On page twenty-two, never wake him before six.
If he sleeps past six, let him. He is not lazy. He is catching up on sixteen years.
On page thirty-one, circled twice, were his mother's heart pills at eight and eight.
If she is rude to you, she is frightened. Give her the box anyway.
On the last page, in smaller writing, I had written that he would not say thank you.
He will do something stupid and expensive instead. Love him anyway until he learns the words.
At ten o'clock he was standing at the bottom of the stairs of The Anchor Pour, holding the booklet in both hands.
