Chapter 25: The Report Goes In
Evander Quist carried his report to the Chancellor's office in Corbel himself, in his black coat, with the biscuit tin under his arm.
He had written it fresh.
He had burned the first letter in the dower house stove.
He had started again at dawn, at the kitchen table, with three women watching from the doorway.
It ran to forty pages.
It set out the debts, to the crown.
It set out the pledge on the mill, the assigned trust, the dowager's own dower mortgaged to her cousin.
It set out the forgeries, with eleven points of agreement in a table.
In the last section, headed Persons Affected, it named Calista Fenrow, Ottilie Dunmere and Elowen Tarn, with their ages and their lodging.
In the final paragraph he had written that he had been their lodger for twenty-six nights.
He had added that he had formed an attachment to one of them.
He had thought about leaving it out.
He had left it in.
The Chancellor of Aldermere was a small grey man behind an enormous desk, with a quill behind each ear.
He took the report from Evander's hand without a word, and read it standing.
He read all forty pages.
The clock on the wall struck eleven while he turned the last.
