Chapter 26: The Auction of the Notes
The creditors of the Marquis of Voltraine met in the guildhall at Corbel on a Tuesday, and the whole town came to watch.
The hall was a long, cold room with a gallery and a dais.
Benches ran down it in rows, and by ten o'clock every one was full of merchants in fur and clerks with ledgers and farmers' wives with baskets, all talking at once.
Calista sat in the third row in her dove-grey wool.
Ottilie sat on her right in a scarlet gown cut for the occasion, and Elowen on her left with the satchel on her knees.
Evander stood behind them, without a seat, because the Crown would not give him one.
He stood against the wall in his black coat, a Treasury man without a post, and she could feel him there behind her.
On the dais, behind a table, the banker sat in a gown of dark red velvet.
He was a stout man with a soft white face, a little like the Dowager's.
A pen which he turned and turned between his fingers.
Beside him, at a smaller table, sat a stranger in a brown coat with a card in front of him marked Bidder.
"The proxy," Ottilie whispered. "Hildegarde's."
"I know."
"He has the look of a man who's been told to win."
