Chapter 27: Evander's Room
The thaw began that night, a week before its time.
Calista heard it first as a drip in the kitchen, then another, and by midnight the whole dower house was ticking with melting snow.
She climbed the attic stair with a candle.
The door was ajar.
Evander sat on the edge of the narrow bed with his coat off, writing nothing, with a tin bucket under the leak in the roof going plink, plink, plink at his feet.
He looked up, and put his pen down.
"The roof," he said. "I did warn you I would complain."
"You haven't."
"I intend to start."
She set the candle on the table and stood there, in her wrapper, with her hair down.
She had not planned what to say.
She had spent the whole of the day since the auction in a haze of bills, signatures and congratulations, and none of it had touched what sat in her chest.
"Evander. I have to tell you something. Before we do anything else."
"Anything you like," he said.
"You've been honest with me."
"I have tried."
"You gave up your post, in a paragraph, because you wouldn't hide what you felt." She sat on the bed beside him, not touching. "So I'll say it.
