Chapter 16: Her Own Funeral
Daphne's POV
The priest began the service in Greek, and I stood behind a gold curtain and listened to the first prayer for my soul.
It was the Trisagion, the one my father's funeral had opened with.
Every child in that parish learned it before she could read.
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.
Three hundred voices answered.
I had been dead for five years, and I stood in the dark of the sacristy and heard them pray me into the ground a second time.
"Now?" Anders said.
"Not yet."
"When?"
"When he says my name," I said.
The old priest said it.
He said it slowly, in Greek, in the voice he kept for the dead.
"Daphne, the servant of God."
Anders put his hand in the small of my back.
I held Irini's drawing against my chest, the boat with its three people.
I walked out through the low door on the left of the altar and into the light.
Nobody saw me for the first three steps.
The candles were bright, and every head in the church was bowed.
I walked down the side aisle past a pillar painted with saints.
