Chapter 13: Show Them
Cavan went down to the gate with Fenny one step behind him.
He did not run.
He walked down the wide stone stairs of the Hall with his back straight, and the guards at the door stepped aside without being told.
The crowd was silent when he came out into the light.
Roddy stood at the front with the maid beside him, and he spread his hands, open and friendly.
"Brother," he said. "Thank you for coming down."
"Say what you came to say," Cavan said.
"I'd rather not." Roddy's voice was soft and sorry. "I've known for months, and I kept it for Father's sake. But the pack deserves to know who rules it."
He turned to the young maid and touched her elbow.
"Tell them what you told me."
The maid stared at her shoes.
"I change the Prince's bed, sir," she whispered. "Every morning for half a year. The sheets are wet through, and they smell of honey."
A murmur ran through the crowd.
"And I've heard him," she said, faster now. "Through the door. He cries like an omega. He begs."
Somebody laughed, short and ugly, and was hushed.
Cavan felt his face go hot.
He felt the first sweet pull low in his stomach, the old warning, and he set his jaw against it.
Fenny's fingers closed on his sleeve, behind his back where nobody could see.
"Breathe," Fenny said under his breath. "Slow. Not now."
Cavan breathed.
The pull slid back.
"This is a Prime who can't hold his own scent in a room," Roddy told the elders. "Who locks himself in to hide a heat. Who married a stranger so that a hired doctor could keep him quiet."
