Chapter 5: A Room in the House
I told the old man I'd stay on my terms.
He raised one white eyebrow, which was all the permission I needed.
"My own doctor," I said. "The clinic across the river. Not yours."
"Fine."
"My landlady comes whenever she likes, and she brings her own food."
"Fine."
"I sign nothing. Not a release, not a custody form, not a napkin."
"Miss Fenn, I am not asking you to sign anything tonight."
"And I leave when I want, for as long as I want, and nobody follows me."
That one he took a little longer over.
"Twelve thousand a month," he said instead, "paid every Friday, for the baby's needs. And you may walk out of my front door whenever you like. If you do not walk back in, my lawyers will have the paper by morning."
"If you file anything, my landlady's video goes to every newspaper in this city."
We looked at each other.
"Then we understand each other," said the old man.
I did not.
He had given me every single thing I'd asked for in under a minute, and a man who does that has something bigger he's counting on.
Dot arrived at nine in her old brown station wagon, with my two suitcases and a casserole dish wrapped in a towel.
She stood in the front hall and looked up at the staircase and the black-and-white floor.
"I've sat in courtrooms with less marble," she said. "Don't touch anything you can't carry."
"I'm not stealing the silver, Dot."
"I know. I meant the people."
She hugged me hard, once.
"I'll be four miles away with a tape recorder and a loaf of bread. You call me."
