Chapter 21: The Stand
The hearing opened at nine on the first Friday in November.
Courtroom 3 was full.
The story had reached the newspapers the night before, in the way Rosamund's stories reached them: a leak with a cream-colored envelope.
The secret wife, the hidden child, the grandmother who only wanted to know him.
Posey sat in the first row behind me with Linus's coloring book in her lap.
Linus himself was down the hall in the courthouse's children's waiting room, with a volunteer and a box of crayons.
My lawyer was a small, dry woman from Savannah's legal aid office.
In our first meeting she had said, "I don't love Rosamund Beaufain, so I'll work for free."
Rosamund's lawyer rose first.
He was a tall man in a pinstriped suit, with a voice like a good radio.
"Your Honor, my client does not seek to take a child from his mother. She seeks only to ensure that the child has access to his father's family and to his father's legacy."
He called me to the stand at ten.
I took the oath with my right hand up and my left hand steady, and I looked at the judge and not at the room.
