I told her on Sunday night where I was going on Monday morning.
I said it standing in Verity's kitchen with a dish towel over my shoulder and Posey pretending to read the back of a cereal box.
"I'm going to the Chatham County clerk's office at nine. I'm not going to file the petition. I wanted you to know that before I left the house."
Ione looked at me from the table, with Linus asleep against her arm.
"Why not?"
"Because it would be me filing it. And you said, in the loft, that you didn't want to live inside my drawer."
"I did say that," Ione said.
"So I'm going to take the drawer apart," I said. "I'll tell you what I'm doing when I do it."
She studied me a moment, and then nodded.
That was all.
But I walked home along the river with my chest light and my hands steady, and I thought: it works.
