Chapter 29: Rosamund

The neurology floor of Candler-Savannah Memorial was the one part of the hospital I had never worked.

I had worked the ER downstairs for six years, and I knew its back stairs, its coffee machines, its loading dock.

I walked through the front doors at noon in the same grey cardigan I'd worn to the loft, with my son's hand in mine.

The security guard looked at me.

It was the same man who had once looked at the floor when my badge failed.

This time he looked me in the eye.

"Ms. Dufresne," he said. "Good to see you."

"Good to see you."

"They put me on days. I heard what happened in the courtroom. I'm glad."

I signed the visitors' log, and I signed Linus in too, in block letters.

I had made the decision on the drive over, with my son in the back seat humming to himself.

I had not asked Posey.

I had not asked Verity.

I had not asked Lachlan, either, because the whole point was that I did not have to.

It was mine to decide, and mine to be answered for.

Lachlan was waiting in the corridor outside Room 412.

He stood against the wall with his arms crossed and a paper cup of cold coffee on the windowsill beside him.
