Chapter 14: The North Jetty
Shao Hanjing opened the second set of the Shipu file at four in the morning, standing, with his coat still on.
Lu Wen had left it on the study desk without a note.
There was nothing else to do with it now.
The first page was a commendation from the Shipu harbor rescue office, dated nine summers ago.
It named a boy of sixteen, Ning Zhe, son of the late Ning Weiguo.
The rescue was off the north jetty, on the evening of the tenth of August.
Beside the name someone had stamped a small red seal.
Hanjing read the date twice.
Then he read the name a third time, although it was the name he had said aloud, every day, for six weeks.
The second page was the jetty log.
Three whistle blasts at dusk.
One swimmer recovered, male, twenty years old, unconscious, breathing.
Rescuer: Ning, Z.
He put his hand flat on the desk.
In nine years he had not once been given the rescuer's name, because he had never asked a fisherman for it.
He had asked the girl at the guesthouse, and the girl had said Yu.
