Chapter 22: The Music Division
They gave us the hospitality suite on the top level, with a long table, a bowl of fruit nobody touched, and a view of the empty floor.
At midnight, the Averill board came in behind my grandfather.
There were six of them in dark coats, gray and careful, who had flown to Nashville because Sonya had sent them an urgent request.
I stood at the head of the table with the banker's box at my feet.
Colt stood by the window with Gus asleep against his shoulder.
Birdie sat in the corner on a velvet chair, swinging her legs, in a paper crown that had survived the whole night.
Grandfather stopped in front of me and put both hands on his cane.
"Linnea," he said. "I have a number of things I would like to say."
"I'm sure you do."
"None of them is good enough."
"Then don't say them," I said. "I'm going to tell you what I want, and the board is going to listen."
A man at the end of the table cleared his throat.
"Chairman, with respect, this is highly irregular..."
"Sit down," Grandfather said, without turning his head, and the man sat.
I took a breath and looked at all six of them.
"I won't take the chair," I said. "I never wanted the chair. I want the music division. Lantern, the publishing, the catalogue and every contract that touches a song. I'll run it, and I'll answer to you for the money and to nobody for the music."
Nobody said anything.
"Second. Every licence Lantern holds on a Songbird song moves into a trust for my children. Today. Not one dollar of it comes back to this company."
