Chapter 15: Pier Street
The bait shop on Pier Street smelled of minnows and old rope.
The stairs behind the counter went up three flights in the dark.
"Fourteen steps a floor," Nash said, ahead of me. "I counted them every night for six years. Mind the fifth one, it bites."
The fifth one did bite.
I came out on the third-floor landing laughing, with my shoe in my hand.
The flat was four rooms in a row, each with an iron bed.
A kitchen at the end held a hot plate older than I was.
On the doorframe, in pencil, ran four columns of height marks with four sets of initials and a date beside each one.
Roan's mark stopped at twelve, where the old man had come for him.
Nobody pointed at it.
The Silent One had the ribs going on a grill bolted to the fire escape.
The smoke smelled like heaven.
Nash stood next to him and took credit.
"The sauce is mine," he said.
"The sauce is mine," said the Silent One.
"I stirred it."
"He stirred it," the Eyebrow agreed, from the couch. "Once."
The whole of Pier Street seemed to have found its way up the stairs.
There were crew wives with foil trays and two old men in cardigans who had known Roan's father.
There was a baby asleep in a laundry basket.
A girl of about nine stared at me for an hour and then whispered, "Are you the one who read the book?"
"I'm the one who read the book," I said.
"Cool," she said, and ran off.
Roan stood in the kitchen door with a beer he didn't drink.
He watched the room as if he'd never seen it so full.
Nash tapped a spoon on a pot.
