Chapter 16: What He Promised Her
On Monday I made rounds on the postpartum floor in a clean white coat, and I left room 412 for last.
It was the only door on the hall that I didn't want to open.
Sabine was sitting up in bed in a hospital gown with her hair brushed, and the baby slept in the clear bassinet beside her.
The vase on the windowsill held no flowers.
"Good morning," I said. "How's the pain?"
"Fine. Everything's fine." She gave me a quick, brittle smile. "They keep asking me about the father. The social worker. The woman with the clipboard. I keep saying, 'We're sorting it out.'"
"You don't have to say anything you don't want to."
"I know." She looked down at her hands. "Can you shut the door?"
I shut it.
She reached under the pillow and took out a folded piece of paper and her phone.
"I need to show you something," she said. "I wasn't going to. And then Joan came."
"Joan was here?"
"Sunday afternoon. After you left." Sabine tucked her hair back with a shaky hand. "She sat in that chair and held the baby for ten minutes and told me what a good girl I was."
