Chapter 5: Welfare Check

"Read it to me," I said.

The deputy cleared his throat. "Spouse reports erratic behavior. Emptying accounts, talk of the end of the world. Requests a mental evaluation and a hold, if necessary."

"Talk of the end of the world," Eli said.

He hadn't moved from the tailgate, but the deputy looked at him and stepped back a pace.

"Who signed under oath?" Eli asked.

"Mr. Sawyer did, sir."

"This morning?"

"Yes, sir."

"I was on the phone with Mrs. Haskell's banker an hour before that," Eli said. "He says she was calm and clear."

That wasn't true, and I almost turned to look at him.

Then I understood he had been lying with a straight face for the whole of his career.

"Deputy," I said, "ask me anything."

"Ma'am, that's not necessary."

"Ask me the date. Ask me who's president. Ask me to count backward from a hundred by sevens."

He glanced at the clipboard. "I don't think that's necessary."

"Then ask me for my license."

I took my paramedic card and my discharge papers out of my jacket and put them on top of his clipboard.

He read them.

"You're the one who got my brother out of the truck," he said quietly.

"Two winters ago."

His ears went red.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Haskell." He tore the order in half. "I'll write up that I found no cause. And I'll note that the petitioner filed a false statement."
