He Left My Bed for His Secretary, So I Took His Brother novel · Chapter 7 of 24
Chapter 7: One Night, No Questions
I drove to Union Pier on Thursday night in Dolores's old Buick, with my father's toolbox in the trunk.
The cottage sat at the end of a gravel road above the lake. It was gray shingle with a deep porch and one lamp that came on by itself.
A storm rolled in off the water just as I carried my bag up the steps.
The lamp went out. The whole house went dark.
I stood in the doorway holding the brass key with its tag that said LAKE.
Headlights swung across the porch.
A truck stopped in the gravel and Nolan climbed out with a bundle of split wood under one arm.
Rain ran off his jacket.
"The power always goes in this weather," he said. "I came to bring you a fire."
"You said nobody had a key but you."
"I don't need a key. I know where my father hid the spare."
He came up the steps and the porch roof thundered over us.
I looked at him. Wet hair, green eyes, the scar through his eyebrow.
I had spent a day and a half not asking what Mallory meant.
I was so tired of not knowing.
"One night," I said.
He stopped. "What?"
"One night. No questions. Not about the station, not about your brother, not about ten years ago. Tonight I only want to feel something that isn't him."
He put down the wood.
"Leah."
"Say yes."
"Yes," he said, hoarse.
I took two steps and grabbed his collar and kissed him.
He made a low sound in his throat. His hands came up into my hair.
His mouth was hot and tasted of rain. He kissed me hard and he did not stop.
He shoved the cottage door open with his shoulder and we fell inside.
He pushed me back against the wall by the fireplace. His hand slid under my sweater, up my ribs, and over my bra.
