Chapter 14: Black Ink
The branch sat across from a feed co-op on Highway 177, and we reached it with twenty minutes to spare.
I walked in with the recorder in my jacket and my driver's license in my hand.
The manager met me at the glass door.
He was a thin, careful man, and he had clearly practiced his apology on the drive back from lunch.
"Mrs. Mercer, I should have called the club president first. The courier knew your husband's name."
"The courier knew Gus Haldane's name," I said. "Show me the resignation."
He led me into his office and set it on the desk.
It was a single page on club letterhead.
At the bottom, in blue ink, was my name.
It was my signature, loop for loop, with the tall K and the long tail on the y.
It was perfect, and that was the problem.
"Do you have my signature card on file?" I asked.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Pull it."
He did.
I laid the card next to the letter and put a pen in my right hand.
"I sign for the club in black ink," I said. "I have since the first week. Gus gave me a black pen in the first week and told me to never change it. Look at that page."
The manager looked.
"The resignation is blue."
"And the date. I write my sevens with a bar through the stem. My grandmother taught me, and it drives the auditors insane. There's no bar here."
He picked the page up and held it to the window.
He went a little pale.
"I'm going to have to call this a disputed signature."
"Call it what you like. Hold the account where it is."
